Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is on Thursday, May 29, 2025, hosting key opposition figures at his Tseikuru home in Kitui County for what insiders describe as an effort "to agree on a top-level deal."

The meeting in Kalonzo’s political backyard comes a month after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hosted opposition luminaries at his Wamunyoro residence as part of consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Gachagua, accompanied by his wife, Dorcas Rigathi, flew to Tseikuru aboard a chopper and landed shortly after 11 am, ahead of the high-level talks aimed at steadying the opposition’s course ahead of the next polls.

The former DP was joined by a host of allies from the Mt Kenya region as he seeks to broaden his support base beyond his home turf in preparation for 2027.

Kalonzo is hosting Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, DAP-K boss Eugene Wamalwa, Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi, and other top opposition figures at his Muuna home in Tseikuru, Kitui County.

Former Cabinet Minister Mukhisa Kituyi is attending what is being seen as a significant opposition strategy session.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka is representing former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who is currently out of the country.

The meeting also aims to present a united front among opposition leaders as they work toward selecting a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.

Kalonzo has assembled hundreds of supporters at his home, including key political allies and grassroots leaders from the region, as he seeks to demonstrate strong regional backing for his bid to clinch the opposition’s presidential ticket.

The meeting comes just a week after President Ruto hosted over 1,600 Ukambani leaders at State House, where discussions centred on transformative development projects planned for the region.

Each major opposition figure is under increasing pressure to consolidate their political base to strengthen their negotiating position in talks on who will fly the coalition’s presidential flag.

Gachagua has previously challenged Kalonzo to deliver at least four million Ukambani votes to the opposition as a condition for securing Mt Kenya’s backing.

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi described the Tseikuru meeting as a game-changing consultative forum for opposition leaders seeking to unseat President Ruto.

President Ruto recently claimed that he offered Kalonzo a position in his government, but the Wiper leader reportedly turned it down.

Kalonzo has publicly rejected any suggestion of working with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Speaking to the media on May 23, 2025, Kalonzo stated firmly: “President Ruto should tell us where exactly we met.

Some State House bloggers are claiming I met him there, but that’s false. This government must go. How could I possibly be aligned with such an administration?”

During a meeting at State House on May 21, 2025, President Ruto revealed that he had approached Kalonzo before reaching out to ODM leader Raila Odinga after the 2022 election.

“This is a major consultative meeting and a gesture of goodwill as we embark on an aggressive push to lock Kenya Kwanza out of the Ukambani region,” Mwangangi said.

“Going forward, Ukambani will make it unequivocally clear that the train has left the station. Our region will not be left behind in forming the next government led by opposition principals.”
