Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has pledged to offer pro bono legal services to Gen Zs who cannot afford lawyers.
The legislator said the move will help offset the burden of legal fees for young Kenyans and is also a form of leadership.
Speaking on Monday at the Obinna TV Show, Babu said everyone is entitled to legal representation; however, there are exceptions to that rule.
“That is why I am here; I am the Gen Z advocate. I am the advocate of Kenyans who cannot afford the services of an advocate. I will do it for free; I will do it pro bono. Mine is about service; leadership is about the people,” he said.
“I can’t make them pay because they might not afford me, but the most important thing is that I look at them as my brothers and sisters who need help. That help involves being a leader, and leadership is about the people. I will be there for them, any time, any day, and anywhere.”
Babu said he enrolled for his law degree to be able to help those who cannot afford lawyers when in need.
According to him, his passion to pursue a law course was brought about by the challenges he experienced growing up.
“I did a course that would help me help those who are facing similar challenges, and I found it in law. That is why I have been making rounds in courts to help those charged with maandamano, terrorism, and others,” he said.
Babu Owino was among the 609 lawyers who were admitted on May 23, 2025, describing it as the beginning of a historic chapter of his life.
“Today marks a historic chapter in my journey—my admission to the bar as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya,” he said.
The ceremony was held at the Supreme Court of Kenya and presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
Speaking after being admitted, Babu Owino pledged to offer free legal representation to Kenyans who cannot afford it.
“This is not for personal glory,” he affirmed that his cases will be on a pro bono basis. “It is for you, that Kenyan who is suffering somewhere, who is looking for justice.”
