Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a week-long series of Jukwaa la Usalama meetings across the six counties of the Nyanza region.

The security engagement tour will kick off on Thursday in Nyamira County, with Murkomen accompanied by Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa, who will host the meetings throughout the region.

On Friday, the team will proceed to Kisii County before taking a break over the weekend.

The meetings will resume on Monday in Migori, followed by Homa Bay on Tuesday, Siaya on Thursday, and finally Kisumu on Friday, where the tour will conclude.

According to Murkomen, the Jukwaa la Usalama forums will provide an opportunity to assess the current security situation, engage with local leadership and communities, and refine strategies to promote peace, cohesion, and stability in the region.

The forums will bring together leaders, National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), police officers, and local peace committees, ensuring a multi-stakeholder approach to tackling insecurity and enhancing public safety.

In addition to addressing security concerns, the meetings will focus on disaster preparedness, a priority as the country continues to grapple with the impacts of climate change, including floods, landslides, and other emergencies that frequently affect parts of the Nyanza region.

Murkomen said the government is keen to understand how well communities are equipped to respond to disasters and what support systems need strengthening.

The Cabinet Secretary and his team will also use the forums to interact directly with frontline security personnel, acknowledging their work and challenges, while reinforcing the Ministry’s commitment to supporting officers through better tools, coordination, and welfare.

Another critical agenda item during the tour is the ongoing rollout of Mobile ID Registration services, which Murkomen said is crucial for ensuring citizens in remote or underserved areas can access national documentation.

Spot checks will be conducted in each county to evaluate the progress of this initiative and address any bottlenecks.

The Jukwaa la Usalama initiative has been increasingly embraced as a model for community-centred policing.

It encourages public participation in security matters, fosters trust between the public and law enforcement agencies, and helps address root causes of insecurity through dialogue and collaboration.
