Tragedy struck on Thursday evening, September 18, when a private car burst into flames after veering off the Kisumu–Kakamega Highway near Majengo.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control and veered off the road before being engulfed by fire suspected to have started in the engine.
Within minutes, the blaze consumed the front section of the car, leaving it a charred wreck as thick black smoke billowed into the sky.
One person died at the scene, trapped inside the burning vehicle, while two others were rescued with serious injuries.
They were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, though their condition remains unclear.
Motorists and passersby rushed to the scene in a desperate bid to put out the fire before emergency services arrived.
Witnesses described frantic efforts to douse the flames using bottles of water and improvised means, though their attempts were overwhelmed by the intensity of the blaze.
The incident comes just a day after another fatal crash on the Isebania–Migori Highway in Migori County, where a Toyota Probox collided head-on with a trailer, leaving two dead and seven others injured.
The back-to-back accidents have reignited concerns over road safety, as authorities continue to grapple with the rising number of fatalities on Kenyan highways.
