Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has congratulated Malawi’s President-elect, Prof. Peter Mutharika, on what he described as a historic and consequential democratic victory.

In a statement, Gachagua lauded the people of Malawi for exercising their sovereign power at the ballot, calling the win “more than a national triumph” but a continental declaration that Africa has turned a new page in its democratic journey.

“This election was more than a national triumph for the Republic of Malawi; it is a continental statement. It is a declaration that Africa, the rising continent and a home to 1.5 billion people, is no longer a playground for religious hypocrisy, conmanship, corruption, dictatorship, and self-serving regimes,” Gachagua said.

He noted that the people of Malawi had reminded the world that the ballot remains the most powerful tool of liberation.

He warned that leaders clinging to power through manipulation, propaganda, abuse of constitutions, and state capture should take note.

“From Idi Amin to Mobutu, from Bokassa to Mugabe, the era of oligarchy and strongmen has collapsed under the weight of people’s power on the ballot. Malawi has reminded us that African citizens are awake. They see. They feel. They think. They act. Kenya is equally watching, ahead of the 2027 General Elections, and Kenyans are wise people,” he added.

Gachagua urged Kenyans to draw strength from Malawi’s courage, reject fear and hopelessness, and embrace democratic means to reclaim their future.

He congratulated Prof. Mutharika on his win and commended outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat and congratulating his rival, terming the gesture a rare show of statesmanship.

“H.E. President-elect Prof. Peter Mutharika, your victory is Africa’s victory and should ring loudly in the hearts of all those still waiting for justice, dignity, real leadership, and liberation. H.E. President Chakwera, you have exhibited great maturity by conceding defeat and calling your opponent. The will of the people is supreme. Wantam is a reality!” Gachagua concluded.
