Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has fired back at retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, urging him to stay out of active politics and emulate the conduct of his predecessors.
Speaking at an empowerment forum in Garissa on Saturday, the Kericho Senator said that the retired Head of State should honor the dignity of the office he once held by steering clear of active politics.
“We would like to tell retired President Uhuru Kenyatta: please be a 'gentleman' like the other former Presidents. When Daniel Arap Moi retired, did you ever see him engaging in politics? When Mwai Kibaki retired, did you see him going into politics?” Cheruiyot posed, drawing reactions from the attendees.
He went on to appeal directly to Uhuru to refrain from issuing public criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
According to the Senator, Kenyatta’s frequent interventions and remarks risk undermining the authority of President William Ruto’s government and creating unnecessary political tension.
He further acknowledged that his own government had its fair share of challenges.
Cheruiyot joins the list of allies of President William Ruto who have dismissed former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s claims that the Kenya Kwanza administration is eroding progress made during his tenure.
His remarks come a day after Uhuru announced plans to embark on a nationwide "meet the people” tour, signaling his renewed involvement in the Jubilee Party’s grassroots mobilization ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The campaign will see the former president travel to different counties, including rural areas, to engage directly with party supporters and local communities.
Speaking during the National Delegation Conference (NDC) on Friday, Uhuru said the initiative aims to strengthen connections between Jubilee leaders and their constituents while charting a clear path forward for the party.
“Mimi nitajitolea sasa kwa sababu tumesema tunataka kuanzisha recruitment drive kuanza kuzunguka mashinani. Kila area tupatane na nyinyi tuongee pamoja na nyinyi…(I will now dedicate myself because we said we want to start a recruitment drive and begin traveling to the grassroots. In every area, let us meet with you and talk together)
"So that together we know which direction forward in the future,” he said.
