Dalmas Otieno

President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga and other top figures have joined hands with thousands of Kenyans to collect over Sh20.7 million for the funeral of the late Dalmas Otieno.

The harambee brought together leaders from across the political divide in a rare show of unity.

President Ruto gave Sh3 million, while Raila Odinga followed with Sh2 million.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki each contributed Sh500,000.

Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko added Sh600,000, while Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and his wife Dorothy donated Sh350,000.

Legislators also came out strongly in support, with John Mbadi giving Sh1 million, Junet Mohamed Sh500,000, Samuel Atandi Sh300,000, Opiyo Wandayi Sh200,000, and Walter Owino Sh100,000, among others.

Other leaders, Eliud Owalo, Pamela Odhiambo, Ndindi Nyoro, Dennis Waweru and several MPs also contributed generously.

Beyond the political class, family, friends and community groups demonstrated immense generosity.

The funeral steering committee pooled Sh4.4 million, the single largest block contribution.

Families such as the Aoll Family gave Sh205,300, while groups like the NPS Class of 1987 raised Sh89,900.

Ordinary Kenyans also sent in contributions ranging from as little as Sh500 to Sh50,000, underscoring the widespread spirit of solidarity.

According to the official tally, the fundraiser realised a total of Sh20,742,326.

The contributions, both large and small, have eased the burden of funeral arrangements and offered comfort to the family at a difficult moment.

In a statement, the Otieno family expressed their gratitude.

“We sincerely thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support you have shown us during this time. Your financial contributions, non-financial assistance, and above all, your prayers have carried us and enabled us to come this far," a brief statement read.

"As we prepare to lay Mzee to rest in the coming days, may you continue praying for God’s grace upon everyone affected by his demise. We are truly humbled and grateful.”

The unity displayed in the fundraiser has become a reminder that moments of grief transcend political and social boundaries, bringing Kenyans together to stand as one.

Otieno,80, passed away September 7.

Born in 1945 in Rongo, Migori County, Otieno had a long and distinguished career in politics and public administration.

He served as Minister for Industrialisation, Labour, and Transport & Communications during his early political life, and later played a central role in digitising government services and modernising civil service operations.

Though he lost his parliamentary seat in 2017, Otieno remained active in national dialogue and was later appointed to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

In 2022, he made an unsuccessful bid for the Migori gubernatorial seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.

A requiem mass was held on Tuesday in Nairobi.

He is set to be laid to rest on October 2 at his rural home in Kangeso village, Migori County.
