Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken about his experience working for former President Uhuru Kenyatta as his Personal Assistant.

Speaking during a TV interview on KTN on Sunday, Gachagua described Uhuru as 'a good boss to work for'.

Gachagua said that he worked for Uhuru Kenyatta from 2001 to 2006.

"I was his personal assistant in charge of politics and political mobilisation, and the journey we started with him, his bid in 2002 did not come through. We knew he wouldn't; it was a strategy to anchor him for bigger things later," Gachagua said.

According to Gachagua, after consulting the people back home, they were of the opinion that Uhuru should not oppose President Mwai Kibaki, but instead support him.

Gachagua said it was a decision Uhuru made in 2006, describing it as a good decision which paid off.

Kibaki became president, and Uhuru was appointed deputy prime minister.

"We pushed on, and he became president for 10 years, and I was part of that journey, and it was a journey that I am proud of. I am very proud that I was involved in the planning, strategising on how Uhuru would become the president of Kenya. I am very proud of my contribution and the role I played in Uhuru to be president of Kenya," he said.

"We worked very well, he was a good boss to work for, self-driven, hard-working, listening, and we worked hard and it paid off."

He, however, said he parted ways with Uhuru after the arrangement they had was over.

Gachagua defended the move to break ranks with Uhuru, saying he made the decision after he delivered on the agreement to make him president.

He said since Uhuru was already serving his second term and was to proceed on retirement later, he (Gachagua) decided to pursue other political interests.

"We had wanted him to be president for 10 years, and he was president for 10 years. It was time to move on and move to other political ventures, so there was no issue because when we joined hands in 2001, we had an agreement that he wanted me to assist him to be president of Kenya," Gachagua said.

"I did, and he became president, and he was having his second term, and the contract was over, and he was proceeding on retirement, and I had to move on and pursue my ambition elsewhere."
