Ithookwe stadium in Kitui was on Monday packed beyond capacity, forcing the overflow crowd to occupy the pitch.

The newly constructed 10,000-seater ultra-modern sports facility hosted this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, which were presided over by President William Ruto.

In his address, President Ruto said that in the spirit of continued observance of the seven-day national mourning following Raila Odinga's passing, “it is fitting and worthy to anchor this year’s Mashujaa celebrations in our departed legend Raila Odinga.”

The President led the nation in observing a moment of silence in memory of the former Prime Minister.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki paid tribute to past heroes and called for renewed dedication to national unity and prosperity.

“As we continue to mourn the departure of Raila Odinga, we remember those who have gone before us for selflessly defending our sovereignty. What remains is to strengthen the foundations of our country and the economic well-being of our people,” he said.

Among invited dignitaries present was Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who personally conveyed his country’s heartfelt condolences following Raila’s death.

“I’m here for the duty of remembrance because our heroes deserve respect, honour and admiration. Colonial history is not all about enslavement but also struggle, dignity and justice long delayed.

"The sons and daughters of Africa must be celebrated because it is an educational tool for transmission of our values,” Faye said.

Mozambique Prime Minister Maria Benvinda, who represented President Daniel Chapo, said the day was a moment of collective reflection and renewal.

“The festivities and commemorations of this Mashujaa Day are not only a time of remembrance and tribute but a moment of introspection for a nation. This occasion is also a reaffirmation of Kenya’s vision, values and determination,” she said.

Kitui Governor Julius Malombe welcomed Kenyans to the celebrations, saying their attendance reflected the country’s shared commitment to service delivery and equitable development.

“I also wish to applaud Kenyans for celebrating the late Raila Odinga, a true hero who tirelessly championed multiparty democracy, constitutional reforms, devolution, and inclusivity,” he said.

This year’s Mashujaa Day, formerly known as Kenyatta Day, marked the 15th edition of the national holiday.

It was themed “Transforming Lives Through Sustainable Energy Solutions,” with at least 160 Kenyans set to be honoured for their contributions to national development.
