Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday visited Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to express his condolences following the death of Kanja’s father, Mzee Weston Kirocho Kanja.

Murkomen was accompanied by Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa, Deputy Inspectors General Eliud Lagat (Kenya Police Service) and Gilbert Masengeli (Administration Police Service); and NTSA Director-General George Njao.

The leaders visited the Kanja family home to offer their prayers and support during what Murkomen described as a period of deep grief for the police chief and his family.

“We stand in solidarity with the family, offering our heartfelt prayers and support during this time of immense grief,” Murkomen said.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin was among the first senior officials to visit IG Kanja’s residence to deliver his condolences.

He described the passing of Mzee Kirocho as a moment of deep sorrow for the entire National Police Service and assured the IG of continued support from his colleagues in the security sector.

Messages of sympathy have also poured in from senior government and police officers who have worked closely with Kanja over the years, reflecting the sense of fraternity that often binds Kenya’s law enforcement community.

Kanja, who took office as Inspector General of the National Police Service in September 2024, has served in the force for nearly four decades.

He joined the service in 1985 as a recruit constable and rose through the ranks to hold several senior command positions, including General Service Unit (GSU) Commandant and Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Kenya Police Service.

The loss comes at a moment of national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, with many leaders rallying together in shared grief.

The visit to Kanja’s home was both an act of compassion and a gesture of unity within the country’s security leadership — a reminder that even those tasked with upholding order are not immune to personal loss.
