DCI releases a timeline from CCTV footage detailing Cyrus Jirongo’s Final Moments // FILEFormer Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died from blunt force trauma that caused severe injuries to the chest and abdomen, an autopsy conducted on his body has revealed.
The post-mortem further showed that he sustained injuries to the spine and legs.
The exercise was conducted at Lee Funeral Home in the presence of family pathologist Joseph Ndung’u and Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor.
Dr Ndung’u said Jirongo’s body had multiple injuries. He noted that the deceased had two fractures on the right hand and fractures on the lower limbs.
“There was a crush injury to the chest with multiple rib fractures, perforation of the heart with rupture of the major vessels connected to the heart. There was also bleeding into the chest cavity,” he said.
He added that the body had crush injuries to the abdomen and liver, leading to bleeding into the abdominal cavity, as well as transection of the spinal cord.
“We formed the opinion that he died as a result of crush injuries to the chest and abdomen, and spinal injuries due to blunt force trauma,” Ndung’u said.
Police officers were also present during the post-mortem examination.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on Tuesday that it had commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death. The former MP succumbed to injuries sustained in a road traffic accident that occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident involved Jirongo’s motor vehicle and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus belonging to Climax Company Limited.
The collision occurred at about 2:19am and resulted in a head-on impact, pushing Jirongo’s vehicle approximately 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus came to a stop about 50 metres away.
In line with its mandate, the DCI deployed a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, who visited the scene, conducted preliminary examinations and secured key exhibits.
Detectives recovered CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station, which is undergoing analysis. The footage shows Jirongo’s vehicle entering the station shortly before the collision and later exiting onto the highway.
Detectives have interrogated the PSV driver, who had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. He was released on cash bail pending further investigations and is required to report back on December 22, 2025.
Investigations are ongoing, with further scene analysis and additional witness statements expected before the file is forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for review and guidance.
