R&B star Karyn White set to perform at One Night Only concert 2026

American R&B singer Karyn White is among the international stars set to perform at Nairobi’s highly anticipated One Night Only concert this Madaraka Day weekend.

For many younger fans, the name may not immediately ring a bell, but for lovers of classic R&B and soul music, Karyn White remains one of the defining voices of late 1980s and early 1990s music.

Best known for timeless hits such as “Superwoman,” “Romantic” and “Secret Rendezvous,” White built a career around soulful vocals, emotional storytelling and powerful stage presence.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Karyn White began her music journey singing in church before later working as a background vocalist for several artists in the entertainment industry.

Her breakthrough came in 1988 with the release of her self-titled debut album “Karyn White,” which quickly established her as one of the leading female voices in R&B music.

The album produced several major hits, including “The Way You Love Me,” “Secret Rendezvous” and the emotional anthem “Superwoman.”

“Superwoman” especially became one of the songs that defined her career.

The song resonated with women across the world because of its emotional lyrics about love, appreciation and emotional exhaustion in relationships.

Decades later, it remains one of the most recognisable R&B songs from the era.

White later released her second album “Ritual of Love” in 1991, which featured the hit single “Romantic.”

The song became a major success and made history after reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

It also topped the R&B charts, further cementing her place in the music industry.

During her peak years, White worked with some of the biggest producers and songwriters in the industry, including Babyface, L.A. Reid and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Her sound blended R&B, pop and soul, helping her appeal to a wide audience at a time when female R&B artists were dominating global charts.

Despite stepping away from mainstream music for several years, White’s music has continued to influence generations of artists and listeners.

Her songs remain popular on streaming platforms, radio throwback shows and nostalgic R&B playlists, especially among millennials who grew up listening to late night soul music and slow jams.

Her Nairobi performance is expected to attract fans eager to relive the golden era of R&B music.

Organisers of “One Night Only” say White’s inclusion in the lineup reflects the concert’s focus on nostalgia, live instrumentation and premium entertainment experiences.

The concert will also feature Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum, Tanzanian star Alikiba and Kenyan singer Bien under this year’s “1 Queen, 3 Kings” theme.

The event is set to take place on Sunday, May 31, at the Sarit Expo Centre in Westlands, Nairobi.

With excitement already building online, many fans are hoping White performs some of her classic songs live, especially “Superwoman,” which remains her signature hit more than three decades after its release.

Organisers have maintained a strict black-tie dress code and no gate tickets policy as preparations continue for what is expected to be one of Nairobi’s biggest entertainment events this year.
