United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina on Friday conceded defeat in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election and pledged to follow up on government projects launched during the campaign to ensure they are completed for the benefit of residents.
Speaking to the press after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Democratic Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru the winner, Muchina thanked voters for participating in the by-election and accepted the outcome.
"I want to thank Ol Kalou residents for turning up in huge numbers to make their voices heard during the by-election," he said.
Muchina also commended the IEBC for conducting what he described as a free and fair election, expressing satisfaction with how the electoral body managed the exercise.
"I also thank the IEBC for conducting a free and fair election. We are convinced the elections were conducted freely and fairly," he said.
He further praised the National Police Service for maintaining security throughout the voting and tallying process, saying officers ensured the exercise was conducted peacefully across polling stations.
The UDA candidate also thanked his supporters for standing with him during the campaign despite the loss.
"Although my votes were not enough, I know they came out and stood by what they believed in," he said.
Muchina went on to congratulate Waweru on his victory, saying leadership now rests with the MP-elect and pledging to support him whenever necessary for the good of the constituency.
"During elections, there must be a winner. I want to congratulate Sammy Douglas on emerging the winner. It is now up to him to take the constituency forward, and we will support him wherever he needs our support," he said.
Beyond the election outcome, Muchina said his focus would now shift to ensuring that development projects launched by the government during the campaign period are completed within the promised timelines.
He said he was satisfied with the projects initiated in the constituency and would continue engaging the government to ensure they are delivered to residents.
"I want to say as an aspirant I am contented with the projects that have been started in our constituency. I will follow up with the government because I stood with the government. I will ensure all the projects started during this campaign are completed within the appropriate timelines," he said.
Muchina expressed confidence that the projects would be completed regardless of the election outcome, noting that they were intended to improve the lives of Ol Kalou residents.
Waweru won the by-election by a wide margin, garnering more than 35,000 votes against Muchina's approximately 5,400 votes.
The victory handed the DCP its first parliamentary seat since the party's formation and has been celebrated by opposition leaders as a significant political milestone ahead of the 2027 General Election.
