Raila Amollo Odinga’s political journey was marked by persistence, resilience, and an unrelenting quest for Kenya’s top seat.

Over the course of five elections—1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022—Raila emerged as one of the most formidable opposition figures in the country’s history.

His first attempt came in 1997 under the National Development Party (NDP), followed by a strong campaign in 2007 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where he came close to victory amid post-election turmoil.

In 2013 and 2017, he faced off against Uhuru Kenyatta, and in 2022, against William Ruto, all without clinching the presidency.

Beyond his presidential bids, Raila remained a key force in shaping Kenya’s democratic landscape.

In 2024, he declared his candidacy for African Union Commission Chairperson but lost the election in February 2025 to Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.

Despite never becoming president, Raila’s political influence transcended electoral results—his vision for reform, devolution, and social justice defined his legacy as one of Kenya’s most impactful leaders. Raila Odinga died on October 15, 2025, aged 80.
