Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, describing him as a “towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.”
Modi is a longtime friend of the PM.
In a condolence message shared on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi said he was “deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Raila Odinga.”
He recalled his long-standing friendship with Raila, which began during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and continued for many years.
“I had the privilege of knowing him closely since my days as Chief Minister of Gujarat, and our association continued over the years,” Modi stated.
The Indian leader praised Raila for his enduring affection for India, noting that he held a deep appreciation for Indian culture, values, and wisdom.
“He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom,” Modi said, emphasizing Raila’s role in strengthening bilateral relations between Kenya and India.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that Raila’s admiration for India was reflected in his efforts to enhance cooperation between the two nations, particularly in areas of cultural exchange, health, and education.
He also recalled Raila’s keen interest in India’s traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda, which had personally impacted his family.
"He particularly admired Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems of India, having witnessed their positive impact on his daughter’s health,” Modi added.
The Indian Prime Minister extended his heartfelt condolences to Raila’s family, friends, and the people of Kenya, acknowledging the depth of their loss.
“I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and to the people of Kenya in this hour of grief,” he said.
Raila Odinga, who had been receiving treatment in India before his death, was widely respected not only in Kenya but also internationally for his advocacy for democracy, justice, and African unity.
His close relationship with India, and in particular with Prime Minister Modi, reflected his commitment to fostering global friendship and cooperation.
The former Prime Minister passed away due to cardiac arrest.
According to mathrubhumi.com, an Indian outlet, Raila collapsed during a morning walk on Wednesday at 8:30 am, within the premises of the Ayurvedic facility.
It was reported that CPR was administered by the medical team on-site
He was rushed to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, where he was pronounced dead around 9.52 am Indian Time. He was aged 80.
