Police: We're fully prepared for WRC in Naivasha

The National Police Service has said it's fully prepared to provide optimum security when the WRC Safari Rally gets underway this weekend in Naivasha.

The motorsport adventure revered as the toughest and most unpredictable events on the WRC calendar gets underway on Thursday through to Sunday, March 23.

It will feature an impressive lineup of foreign and home-made rally drivers keen to beat the rough terrain, deep ruts and the ever-present threat of sudden rainfall.

Kenya is represented by 18 drivers, including the only female rally driver Pauline Sheghu, a former TV news anchor.

The spectacle, which also serves as a trousit attraction, traditionally attracts local and international rally fanaticts in their thousands, necessitating a robust security arrangement.

"To ensure that this momentous event runs smoothly, the National Police Service will be on the ground to provide security and ensure the safety of all," NPS said in a statement.

"We have deployed additional Traffic Police Officers on the roads to ensure the free flow of traffic. In addition, we are collaborating with the National Transport and Safety Authority to conduct road safety compliance checks," the service added.

The police asked rally enthusiasts and members of the public to strictly adhere to directives given by the organisers and the police to ensure safety and the success of the event.

These includes directive to use alternative routes or rescheduling travel plans.

NPS said with onset of the long rains, motorists, pedestrians, and all other road users should exercise extreme caution and adhere to traffic rules to prevent accidents.

"We particularly urge bus and lorry drivers to refrain from parking along the Naivasha–Nakuru Road or causing obstructions."

NPS further encouraged the public to exercise citizen policing by reporting crime and other activities that contravene the law to any police officer, the nearest police station or through toll-free numbers: 999, 911, 112, and #FichuakwaDCI 0800 722 203.

The WRC Safari Rally is not only renowned for its challenging rally stages but also for its stunning landscapes, wildlife, and the unparalleled hospitality of the Kenyan people.
