Coast security and traffic operations beefed up ahead of Easter holiday

Police chief warns beachgoers to vacate the sites by 6 pm

A multi-agency security team has been formed in the Coastal region to ensure safety during the Easter holiday.

Coast Police Commander (RPC) Ali Nuno assured both local and international visitors of enhanced security throughout the festive period.

“Being a popular tourism destination, I want to assure both local and international visitors to come and enjoy their holidays on our beautiful beaches," Nuno stressed at the Regional Police Headquarters in Mombasa.

"We have an operation order in place with security teams strategically positioned across the entire region to ward off criminals and as well prevent accidents."

He further attributed most of the accidents witnessed in the region to drunk driving, fatigue, or driver negligence.

“My advice to all travelers is to ensure you have a responsible driver. We will not tolerate road accidents in our region.”

He said parents whose children under 18 years are found with offensive weapons such as machetes and rungus will be charged with negligence.

“For those above 18, parents will be charged with harbouring criminals. Whether the child is above or below 18 years, we will hold parents accountable. They must take their parental responsibilities seriously,” the police chief warned and advised beachgoers to be vacating the sites by 6 p.m.

 Mombasa County Commissioner, Mohammed Noor also assured residents and tourists of enhanced security during Easter saying the multi-agency taskforce comprised of among others police, the National Government Administrative Officers, well as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

“I want to assure Kenyans that we are well prepared to handle all incidents during this Easter holiday,” Noor stated. 

On his part NTSA Chairman Khatib Mwashetani said their main focus is on key exit routes: Mombasa to Nairobi, Mombasa to Kilifi, Mombasa to Lamu, and Mombasa to Lungalunga.

Mwashetani urged motorists to exercise caution, avoid drunk driving, and adhere to all traffic rules and regulations, including having a functional speed governor.

“We will conduct a massive crackdown, and those who flout the law and endanger Kenyans will face the full force of the law,” he warned.
