Kenyan musician Marya, widely known for the hit song "Chokoza," has opened up on how her life has changed since suffering a stroke earlier this year.
In an interview on the Obinna Show Live, streamed on September 22, 2025, on YouTube, the Kenyan music veteran shared what caused the stroke and what happened after.
In May 2025, news that the singer had suffered a stroke hit the internet, with fellow artists and fans expressing concern.
After being discharged from the hospital, the artist took to social media to share an update on her condition.
In the recent interview with Obinna, the Chokoza hitmaker recalled the events of that fateful day and how they have affected her life.
"We went to the hospital. A scan here and there, the doctor asked if I knew what had happened. I just told the doc, 'Yes, I have a clue' because I could tell something was not right. I couldn't feel my hand. So I kept on wondering why. So I knew immediately this was a stroke," Marya stated.
"Then they told me the type of stroke I had, which is called an ischemic stroke," the singer revealed.
An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked by a blood clot or plaque, reducing blood flow to the brain.
Marya reveals that she was panicked after the doctor confirmed she had a stroke. This medical emergency left the left side of her body paralysed.
After being discharged from the hospital, the singer began intensive physiotherapy.
"I am way better!" the artist said during the interview. "But I'll tell you it's not easy. I just keep fighting. I keep on fighting, trying to tell myself to continue with physio even when I'm tired," the artist remarked. "Even physio is painful," she added.
Marya also revealed that her friends left her after she suffered a stroke.
"All of them, they left. I'll never count on friends. Become sick and you'll know who your friends are," she said. "Only a few stayed," she added.
"I can't walk. My left side is completely paralysed," Marya revealed.
With physiotherapy, the singer is expected to regain mobility in her left hand and leg.
The Chokoza hitmaker also shared that people send messages of encouragement while on her recovery journey. She also credited her family and best friend for being with her through this ordeal.
