The Nairobi Mtaa volleyball tournament began in 2015 and is played twice a month.
It is officiated by the Kenya Volleyball Federation [KVF] accredited referees who later evaluate the performance and determine the champion.
Speaking ahead of the event, the organiser Silvans Omondi, said they aim to nurture talent, empower the youth and promote sportsmanship.
“At the start of this tournament, our main agenda was to nurture young volleyball talents, create career pathways to excel in the national league and beyond. Empowering our jobless youths through this tournament remains our key factor," said Omondi.
"A good number of players have excelled in the top-tier league courtesy of the Nairobi Mtaa volleyball tournament. This gives us morale to do better and better”.
Chema Volleyball Club duo of Hudson Kipchumba and Steven Otieno are among the Nairobi Mtaa graduates. They are currently representing the club at the ongoing Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Cup in Dar es Salaam.
Others are Gregory Kiplimo (Kenya Prisons), Noah Swao and Brian Omenya (Traiblazers) and Basil Orega (Equity).
Omondi made a call for help, saying: “I call upon corporate companies to partner with us in strengthening the tournament. An increase in cash price will boost players' morale and bring competition, thus we will achieve the best results.”
