Strathmore Leos head coach Willis Ojal has challenged his players to make stronger starts as they fine-tune preparations for the National Sevens Circuit, which kicks off with the Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru later this month.

Despite guiding his side to victory at last weekend’s Ruff and Tuff pre-season tournament, Ojal said the team cannot afford to keep playing catch-up once the competitive season begins.

“If you carefully observe most of our matches, we are coming from behind. At the circuit, you can’t afford to be behind because you will end up losing most of the matches,” said Ojal.

The varsity side drew 17-17 with Nondescripts before recovering to beat Kenya Harlequin 19-10 and thrash Blak Blad 29-0 in the pool stages. They then fought back from 12-0 down to defeat Mwamba 24-12 in the semi-finals before edging hosts Nondescripts 15-14 in a thrilling final.

Ojal said the tournament provided valuable lessons and the coaching staff is now refining the team’s tactical approach.

“From the tournament, we have some minor adjustments to make to ensure we remain competitive. We want to focus on doing the basics well while also introducing a few new plays,” he said.

The coach also welcomed the return of France-based Bethuel Muteshi, saying the experienced forward will provide leadership and mentorship during the sevens campaign. “We are glad to have Muteshi back.  He is currently on his off-season break and will be a valuable asset. He is experienced, has been part of this team before, understands our culture and ethos, and we are delighted to have him with us for this period,” Ojal added.

Strathmore have also strengthened their squad during the mid-season transfer window, signing Charles Wangwe Owino and Dennis Mutembei from Catholic Monks after impressive performances in university rugby.

The Leos have further boosted their ranks through the New Player Registration (NPR) window, bringing in Emmanuel Otweyo, Jayden Mukisa, Patrick Ochieng, Nigel Aggrey Okoko, Kenneth Ndiritu Kamau, Alvin Orina, Brill Anik Otenga and Patrick Kluivert Ochieng.

Having finished runners-up in last season’s circuit, Ojal is targeting another strong campaign but insists the team will take each tournament as it comes. “It is a tough series, and we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. We definitely want to go all the way, but we will take it one tournament at a time,” he said.
