Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the government's commitment to advancing gender equality and social inclusion, following a meeting with commissioners of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC).
Kindiki said equality and social inclusion remain important aspirations for the country and called for sustained efforts to ensure the inclusion of special interest groups in national development.
He said women, children, youth, persons with disabilities, older members of society, minorities and marginalised groups should remain at the centre of the country's strategic implementation of public affairs.
The Deputy President met NGEC commissioners to review progress, achievements and challenges in advancing gender equality and social inclusion across the country.
According to Kindiki, the meeting focused on following up on milestones, successes and challenges in the gender equality and social inclusion agenda.
The Deputy President said the government and the commission had agreed to combine national efforts towards the realisation of the two-thirds gender rule.
They also agreed to strengthen efforts to combat gender-based violence, including femicide, and to put in place measures aimed at enhancing the protection of minorities and marginalised groups.
“Equality and social inclusion remain important aspirations for our nation,” Kindiki said.
“The inclusion of special interest groups- women, children, the youth, persons with disability, older members of the society, minorities and marginalized groups- is a perpetual objective that we must actualize, track and deliberately retain in our strategic implementation of our country’s affairs.”
He added that the meeting had agreed to “combine all national efforts towards the realization of the two thirds gender rule, upscaling the war on gender based violence including femicide and institute measures for enhancing protection of minorities and marginalized groups.”
