The chairperson of the Council of the Kenya School of Government, Charles Nyachae has pledged to restore trust in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Nyachae, who is seeking to fill the vacancy left following the end of the tenure of the late IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati, promised to reverse the trust deficit if he is appointed to the position.
Appearing before the Selection Panel responsible for the recruitment of nominees for the positions of chairperson and members of IEBC, Nyachae said a lot of effort would be put to enhance the confidence Kenyans have in the management of national elections.
“Alongside everything else that the commission shall be doing from day one, will be efforts geared towards reducing the trust deficit,” he stated.
Nyachae told the selection panel led by Nelson Makanda that he wants to be remembered as the chair who completely reduced the trust gap.
“The people of Kenya must feel like the losing side in Rio in a football match. They should say, they lost but that's the way it goes because we cannot all win but we have nothing negative to say about the electoral management,” he explained.
Nyachae is among 11 candidates who were shortlisted for the position.
The others include; former Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi, Abdulqadir Lorot Ramadhan, Joy Mdivo, Edward Katama Ngeywa, Erastus Edung Ethekon, Francis Kakai Kissinger, Jacob Ngwele Muvengei, Lilian Wanjiku Manegene, Robert Akumu Asembo, and Saul Simiyu Wasilwa.
Previously, Nyachae was the chairperson of the one and only Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) from 2010 to 2015, where he played a role in implementing the Constitution, entrenching the institutions created by the Constitution and safeguarding and promoting democracy in the country.
He has worked at the Kenya Law Reform Commission, where he was a Commissioner, the Institute for Education in Democracy, where he served as chairperson, the International Commission of Jurists Kenya Section, as head and the founding partner of Nyachae & Ashitiva Advocates.
