Five people
have lost their lives in a violent clash in Angara Barrikoi, Narok County.
The violence
erupted Monday following a dispute over a piece of land, resulting in the
confirmed deaths of five individuals.
Local
residents, claiming historical ownership of the land, blocked the main road to
prevent land officials from surveying the area.
The protest
quickly escalated into violent clashes with police officers, leading to
injuries on both sides.
In addition
to the fatalities, a vehicle belonging to the land officials was damaged during
the unrest.
The vehicle
was attacked by residents, further intensifying the already tense situation.
The damage to the vehicle, seen as a symbol of the government’s intervention, added to the growing frustration and anger in the community.
Officer in charge of Angata Barrikoi Health Centre, Joel Langat, reported that four people were brought in dead, and one succumbed while undergoing treatment, all having sustained gunshot wounds.
Angata Barrikoi MCA Joseph Koech and activist Johana Kamilan were visibly emotional after viewing the bodies.
Koech expressed frustration, questioning why the people were killed over disputed land while they are the genuine owners.
Local
leaders, including elders, have stepped in to mediate, urging both the
community and authorities to avoid further violence and engage in peaceful
dialogue to resolve the land dispute.
Efforts are
also underway to support the families of the deceased and those injured.
The situation remains tense, and authorities are calling for restraint from all parties.
An independent investigation into the incident is being called for, as the community hopes for a peaceful resolution to the longstanding land issue.
