I'm a humble person not fiery, Gachagua says

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has opened up about his personality and addressed why many perceive him as fiery.

Gachagua, who is often associated with blunt political rhetoric, said the public often misjudges him based on his bold speeches, especially on television. In reality, he insisted, he is far more reserved than people think.

“I’m a very humble person. Sometimes people assume I’m fiery because of my speeches on TV,” he said in a video seen by The Star.

“They think I’m tough-skinned, but I’m actually quite soft. I’m like a tortoise—tough on the outside, but soft underneath.”

The former DP explained that while his tone may come across as combative when discussing issues he cares about deeply, his nature is actually gentle, and he values humility above all.

Gachagua served as Kenya’s second Deputy President from September 2022 until his impeachment in October 2024.

He built a reputation as a pragmatic and outspoken leader, known for his grassroots appeal and firm stance on service delivery, local empowerment, and economic transformation.

His leadership style was direct and unfiltered—qualities that endeared him to his political base, particularly in the Mount Kenya region. Yet, behind the stern political image, Gachagua has occasionally shown a lighter, more approachable side.

He has been seen participating in traditional dances and community events, embracing cultural moments and interacting warmly with locals.

His speeches often include local idioms and humorous anecdotes, revealing a sense of humor that contrasts with his serious public persona.

On Thursday, May 15, Gachagua took a bold step towards the 2027 general election by unveiling interim officials of his newly formed Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

The new party lineup includes notable former UDA and Jubilee figures, among them ex-UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala, who was appointed as deputy party leader.
