Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i says he has always respected the law, even during his time in high office.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citizen TV’s Sam Gituku, Matiang’i stated that he has never acted above the law.

“I always subject myself to the law. Even when I was a minister, I was not above the law,” he said.

Matiang’i was responding to questions about his conduct while in government and his current political ambitions.

He dismissed any claims of wrongdoing and said that legal avenues remain open for anyone with evidence against him.

“If you believe I’ve done something wrong, go to the DCI or any investigative agency and give them the information. I’ve never been above the law,” he added.

Pressed about his wealth, Matiang’i declined to give details, arguing that he is not currently a public servant.

“I’m not a public official, and even if I disclosed my wealth, that is not for public consumption,” he said.

He, however, noted that should he choose to vie for office in the future, he would be open to scrutiny.

“I understand that once I declare my candidature, these questions will be relevant. And I’ll be ready to answer them,” Matiang’i said.

Dr. Matiang’i served in several powerful ministries under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration—including Education, ICT, and Interior—where he was known for his firm approach and strong work ethic.

Since leaving office in 2022, Matiang’i has maintained a low profile, though he has recently reappeared in the public eye amid growing speculation of a political comeback ahead of the 2027 elections.
