Lawyer Kibe Mungai, representing blogger Ndiang’ui Kinyagia, has made a formal request for time and privacy to speak with him following his unexpected reappearance after over a week in hiding.
Appearing in court on Thursday, where Ndiang’ui resurfaced after disappearing since June 21, 2025, Mungai said the blogger was still traumatised.
“I request this honourable court to grant the family and myself... time for us to be able to talk to him in confidence and privacy,” the lawyer stated, noting that Ndiang’ui’s family only managed to see him for the first time in court that morning.
The lawyer described Ndiang’ui as "still very traumatised" and urged the court to allow a return session next week, during which the blogger would be present and better able to provide clarity on his disappearance.
“We urge that any time in the course of next week, we be given an opportunity to come back to this court, accompanied by him, so that he is able, and we are able, to be of further assistance,” he said.
The lawyer expressed regret at not being able to provide more detailed information to the court at that stage, citing the need for a proper, private conversation with Ndiang’ui.
He said he needed to understand “exactly what was happening during those traumatising 10 or so days when he was away.”
Earlier on Thursday, lawyer Wahome Thuku stated that Ndiang’ui was well and alive, and had contacted his family on Tuesday evening.
Ndiang’ui “had hidden temporarily for fear of his life upon learning that DCI officers were looking for him over unknown criminal allegations”.
“Ndiangui has indicated that he is ready and willing to present himself to the DCI and to be presented before any court of law when his safety and security are guaranteed,” Thuku added.
The blogger disappeared on June 21, 2025. Consequently, a court order directing the police to produce the blogger was issued on July 1.
Then, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) denied holding him, stating that the police did not know about the blogger’s whereabouts either.
DCI confirmed that Ndiang’ui was linked to an X account that posted a viral photo of a mock invitation to the June 25, 2025, memorial protests
