President William Ruto has congratulated Kenya’s Under-20 women’s volleyball team after they clinched the African Nations U20 Championship.

The team recorded a 3–1 victory over hosts Cameroon in Yaoundé on Monday night.

The win capped a dominant performance by the young Kenyan side, which showcased skill, determination and teamwork throughout the tournament.

“From the football pitch to the volleyball court, our athletes are showing the continent what unity, talent, and resilience can achieve,” Ruto said in his congratulatory message.

“Hats off, champions! You’ve made the nation proud and proven once again that Kenya shines brightest when we stand together.”

The Head of State paid special tribute to Terry Tata Mallin, who was named both Best Opposite and Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the championship.

Mallin maintained her MVP streak after starring in earlier matches against Egypt, Senegal, Burundi, and Uganda.

He also commended Milka Akinyi, who was voted Best Outside Hitter for her outstanding performances and consistency during the competition.

“This emphatic triumph is a testament to resilience, skill, and an unshakable fighting spirit — one that inspires a new generation of volleyball stars across Kenya,” Ruto said.

Kenya’s win over the Cameroonian hosts further cements the country’s growing reputation as a powerhouse in African women’s volleyball, with the team’s youthful energy and discipline serving as an inspiration to aspiring athletes nationwide.

The Junior Malkia Strikers won the first set 26-24, but Cameroon rallied from behind to take the second 25-19.

The Kenyan girls recovered to win the third set 28-26 and subsequently the fourth set 25-16.,

Both teams qualified for the final of the tournament for the first time, and both booked their places in the 2026 World Under-20 Championships.

Kenya and Cameroon will be joined by eight-time champions Egypt, who beat Senegal 3-1 in the play-off for third place to claim bronze.
