Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said that the
government is intentional about increasing investments into the Harambee Stars
and sports development across all in the country.
Speaking on Sunday at Tarbaj Teachers Training College
during the Tarbaj Constituency Economic Empowerment Programme in Wajir County,
Kindiki said it is the responsibility of government to ensure there are modern
facilities for sports people to use in sharpening their skills.
He praised Harambee Stars for their spirited run to the
quarter-finals of the ongoing CHAN tournament, promising government support to
strengthen the national team ahead of future competitions.
The DP said the team made Kenyans proud despite being
eliminated by Madagascar in a penalty shootout.
“We are proud of what Harambee Stars have done for our
country. Going forward, we will continue to motivate our players and the
technical bench. We will improve their welfare and support them as they prepare
for AFCON 2027 and the World Cup qualifiers,” Kindiki said.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to upgrading
sports facilities across the country, noting that modern stadiums and playing
fields will give young people the chance to nurture talent and pursue sports as
a career.
“We are committed to building stadiums and improving sports
fields, including soccer, volleyball, handball, netball, and rugby, so that our
youth can utilize their talents and earn a living through sports,” The DP said.
Kindiki also used the occasion to reaffirm the Kenya Kwanza
government’s promise of equitable development across the country.
He said President William Ruto’s administration is
determined to unite Kenyans through projects that uplift all regions.
He pointed to the ongoing construction of the
Mandera–Rhamu–Elwak–Kotulo–Tarbaj–Wajir–Modogashe–Isiolo road, which he said
will be completed on time, opening up northern Kenya to trade and investment.
He further highlighted the LAPSSET corridor road running
from Lamu through Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo, Samburu, and Turkana.
On energy access, Kindiki announced that more than 18,500
families in Wajir County are being connected to electricity under a Sh3 billion
programme.
He added that hybrid power plants worth Sh500 billion are
being established in Merti, Habaswein, Eldas, and Elwak to strengthen the
national grid.
Other government initiatives in Wajir include the
construction of fresh produce markets, affordable housing, and student hostels
for Tarbaj Vocational Training Centre, Tarbaj Teachers Training College, and
other learning institutions.
The event was attended by senior leaders including National
Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, Majority
Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Wajir Senator Abass Sheikh Mohamed, and several MPs
and MCAs from the region.
