Former Chief Justice David Maraga on Thursday paid a visit to four young men admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital after they sustained gunshot wounds during the June 25 commemoration of last year’s youth protests.
The commemoration was organised to honour those who died in the 2024 demonstrations against economic injustices and the Finance Bill of that year.
What was expected to be a peaceful remembrance in Nairobi ended violently after police allegedly opened fire on demonstrators.
Several people were injured in the incident, including the four who are still undergoing treatment at the national referral hospital.
Maraga, who served as Kenya’s 14th Chief Justice, met the patients and their families during his hospital visit.
In a statement released afterwards, he expressed concern over the impact of the injuries on the young men.
“The lives of these young people have been stalled by these injuries. We must continue seeking accountability and justice as those responsible for these injuries continue to hold public office,” he said.
He added that his thoughts were with the
victims as they continued their recovery process. Hospital officials confirmed
that the four patients remain in stable condition as they receive medical care.
