President William Ruto has renewed calls for Africa to be
granted permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council,
terming the continent’s exclusion unacceptable and indefensible.
Speaking at the 7th Summit of the Committee of Ten Heads of
State and Government on UN Security Council Reform, Ruto said Africa’s voice
must be amplified across all global platforms.
“We must correct this historic injustice to make the UN fit
for purpose,” the President said.
“African leaders must unite behind fair representation and
defend the Common African Position.”
The Summit was held on the sidelines of the 80th United
Nations General Assembly in New York on Sunday.
President Ruto assured that Kenya will fully support the
push to ensure Africa’s demands are no longer deferred.
He also urged African states to prepare to shoulder the
responsibilities that come with permanent membership.
“As we press for representation, we must also agree on how
we will choose our representatives,” he said.
The summit, convened by Sierra Leone, brought together
African leaders under the Committee of Ten (C10), which has been championing
the continent’s position on reforming the UN Security Council.
Ruto arrived in New York for the 80th UNGA meeting on
Sunday.
The President is expected to advocate for a more inclusive
United Nations that can effectively address pressing global peace and security
challenges. His agenda includes enhancing peace efforts in Sudan, South Sudan,
the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and Haiti.
He will also host a high-level side event on Haiti during
UNGA week, sharing lessons learned from the deployment of troops under the
Multinational Security Support Mission. The meeting is expected to guide the
next steps in strengthening global security efforts.
As Chair of the African Union’s Committee of Heads of State
and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), Ruto will lead deliberations to
consolidate Africa’s position ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
In addition, he will host a High-Level Breakfast on
Affordable Housing, bringing together more than 30 Heads of State and
Government to highlight housing as a foundation of social transformation.
The President will also hold bilateral talks with global
leaders, development partners, and industry executives to secure investments
and partnerships in key sectors such as agriculture, technology,
infrastructure, and energy under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
