The Kenya African National Union (Kanu) Secretary of Political Affairs Fredrick Okang’o, has resigned.

In a letter seen by the Star, addressed to the party’s Secretary General George Wainaina, Okang’o also quit as a member of the party. The resignation is effective immediately.

“I hereby resign, with immediate effect, from the position of Secretary of Political Affairs and from membership of Kanu, in line with the Political Parties Act, 2011, and the Kanu Constitution,” the letter reads.

Okang’o explained that his decision was guided by personal political growth and the shifting realities of Kenya’s politics.

“Kenya is at a crossroads that calls for bold choices, fresh leadership, and transformative renewal. Guided by this conviction, I will, in due course, engage Kenyans on the next phase of my political journey,” he stated.

He however, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the party’s vision.

“I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served and contributed to Kanu’s vision and I wish the party well as it continues its role in Kenya’s democratic journey,” Okang’o said.

Okang’o currently serves as the Public Communications lead of the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests, appointed by President William Ruto a few weeks ago.

On Monday, Okang’o, in a post on X hinted at closing a chapter of his life but did not say what it was.

“Every season has its end, and every journey a new beginning. Sometimes, the path of destiny leads you to where the people’s heartbeat is strongest. The winds of change are calling… tomorrow is that day!” he said.
