Former Chief Justice David Maraga is taking an active role in encouraging young Kenyans to participate in the democratic process.
Today, he will visit voter registration centers across Nairobi to advocate for youth registration.
The initiative comes at a critical time, as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) continues its nationwide voter registration exercise.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has resumed the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
In a public notice, the commission urged all eligible Kenyans to register at any IEBC constituency office, except in areas currently undergoing by-elections.
The services available during the CVR exercise include new voter registration, correction or update of voter details, transfer of registration to a new polling station or constituency and verification of voter information.
To qualify for registration, one must be a Kenyan citizen aged 18 years and above, possess a valid Kenyan National ID or valid passport, not previously registered as a voter, not convicted of an election offence in the past five years and not declared to be of unsound mind
“The commission encourages all unregistered citizens to take advantage of the ongoing exercise and register early,” the IEBC stated.
As the exercise resumed, Maraga said his team would tour several key registration points, engaging with eligible voters and addressing questions about the registration process.
“Together with a section of our youth, I will be visiting registration centers in Nairobi as we advocate for voter registration,” Maraga said.
Kenya’s youth form the largest demographic in the country, making their participation essential in shaping leadership and policy decisions that affect areas such as education, employment, and governance.
