Kenyan boxing is set for a major showcase as Kalakoda Promotions unveiled
the full fight card for the upcoming “Nightmare in Nairobi 4” boxing gala
scheduled for May 15 at Masshouse, Nairobi.
The announcement was made during a media briefing on April 23, where
organisers expressed confidence that the event will mark a turning point for
the local boxing scene, which they say is undergoing renewed growth.
The headline bout will see George Onyango face Benjamin Mchunguzi for the
East and Central African Super Welterweight Title in what promoters have
described as a high-stakes regional clash expected to draw significant
attention. The event is organised in collaboration with 1XBET.
Speaking at the event, Marvin Obuya, Head of Boxing at Kalakoda Promotions,
said the organisation is focused on rebuilding Kenyan boxing through structured
investment, talent development, and improved welfare systems for fighters.
“When we first looked at the boxing landscape in Kenya, we didn’t just see a
sport; we saw a legacy waiting to be reclaimed,” said Obuya.
“Kenya has always had the heart of a champion. Our mission is simple: to
provide the platform that matches that pulse.”
Obuya noted that financial constraints and weak athlete welfare structures
have historically hindered the sport’s growth, but said the new partnership
model is designed to address those gaps.
“We are pleased with this partnership which will significantly improve the
sport, boost the athletes, broaden the opportunities and keep boxing alive,” he
said.
“Kalakoda is now here to inject the much needed breath of fresh air, raise
the boxers’ fortunes and propel the sport to greater heights.”
He added that Kalakoda is investing in modern training equipment, improving
gym standards, and strengthening the transition pathway from amateur to
professional boxing.
“We strive to bring world-class production values to Kenyan soil so that our
athletes aren't just local heroes, but global stars,” Obuya said. “Kenyan
boxers are no longer just ‘game’ opponents on the international stage—they are
becoming the ones to beat.”
1XBET Director Kennedy Mumo said the partnership is aimed at strengthening
the sport’s ecosystem by supporting fighters, events, and infrastructure
development.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to supporting local talent and
contributing to the growth of sport in Kenya,” said Mumo.
“We believe in the potential of Kenyan athletes, and through this collaboration,
we are proud to play a role in helping them access greater opportunities.”
He added: “We are all about impact. It’s about creating real opportunities
for fighters—giving them a platform, consistency, and the ability to take their
careers further.”
The fight card features several high-profile bouts beyond the main event. In
the co-main clash, Martin Achebi returns after a viral knockout performance to
face Uganda’s Abaasi Sseguya in a bout expected to test both fighters’ momentum
and resilience.
Elsewhere, Brian Acholo is set to take on Allen Mlati, while rising prospect
Sam Kogeluk, popularly known as “Mufasa,” will look to extend his winning
streak when he meets Otieno Owenge following a recent knockout victory.
Promoters said the event will combine elite competition with enhanced
production standards as part of a broader effort to reposition Kenyan boxing on
the regional and international stage.
