A number of high-profile corruption, unexplained wealth and public land recovery cases involving billions of shillings are scheduled for hearing and mention in courts across the country this week.

The cases, being prosecuted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), touch on allegations ranging from procurement irregularities and money laundering to conflict of interest, fraudulent acquisition of public property and illegal acquisition of public land.

Among the most closely watched matters is a suit seeking the recovery of Sh1.2 billion allegedly irregularly paid by the Turkana county government to companies associated with the defendants.

The case involving Stephen Lowoton, trading as Napeyok Suppliers and Contractors, Trabano Investments Limited and others is scheduled for mention at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Monday.

The court is also expected to mention a suit seeking the forfeiture of unexplained assets worth Sh713.7 million involving Felix Nyakundi and three others.

Another unexplained wealth case involving Joseph Chege Gikonyo and others seeks recovery of Sh615 million and is also scheduled for mention at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.

Former Murang'a Governor Francis Mwangi wa Iria and eight others are set to appear before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court for hearings running from June 15 to 17.

They face charges including conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, unlawful acquisition of public property, conflict of interest and money laundering linked to an alleged irregular Sh351.1 million contract awarded by Murang'a County to a media consultancy firm.

At the same court, Daniel M Wambua and Judith Vaati Matheka are facing a suit seeking forfeiture of unexplained wealth amounting to Sh124.6 million.

Several public land recovery matters are also on the court calendar this week.

These include a suit seeking the recovery of land in Nairobi West reserved for a public car park, another involving land allegedly reserved for Machakos Prison, and separate recovery proceedings concerning parcels in Kerugoya, Nyeri and Limuru.

At the Environment and Land Court in Eldoret, a hearing is scheduled in a suit seeking the recovery of Eldoret Municipality Block 7/209, which the EACC alleges was irregularly acquired by private developers.

The anti-graft agency is also pursuing the recovery of two parcels of land in Nairobi valued at a combined Sh355 million that were allegedly reserved for Nairobi City County.

Meanwhile, former Kenya Rural Roads Authority employee Esther Chege and six others are set to appear before the Kajiado Law Court over allegations of conflict of interest and unlawful acquisition of public property.

The allegations relate to dealings between the authority and a company allegedly linked to the first defendant through proxies and relatives.

At the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, Sammy Kipngetich Kirui and 11 others face charges of conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption in connection with the purchase of land in Machakos intended for cemetery use by the former City Council of Nairobi.

Several cases involving alleged forgery of academic certificates to secure public employment are also due for mention this week.

They include matters involving former employees of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company and the Commission on Revenue Allocation.

The outcomes of the proceedings are expected to be closely watched as Kenya continues efforts to strengthen accountability, integrity and transparency in the management of public resources.
