Somalia's private healthcare sector is experiencing a
notable transformation as increasing numbers of people seek hair transplant
procedures within the country, reducing the need for costly medical trips
abroad.
For years, Somalis affected by hair loss, receding hairlines
and baldness often travelled to countries such as Turkey, India and the United
Arab Emirates in search of advanced hair restoration treatments.
However, improved local healthcare services and investment
in specialised cosmetic procedures are beginning to reverse that trend.
The growing demand for hair restoration services reflects
rising public awareness of available treatments and greater confidence in local
medical expertise. Industry players say the shift is helping expand access to
procedures that were once largely unavailable in Somalia.
Hair loss affects both men and women and can result from
various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, stress, nutritional
deficiencies, underlying medical conditions and ageing.
Medical experts note that beyond physical appearance, hair
loss can significantly affect self-esteem, confidence and mental wellbeing.
The increasing demand has created opportunities for
specialised clinics to introduce modern technologies aimed at addressing
different forms of hair loss.
Among the facilities contributing to the sector's growth is
Asal Hair & Skin Clinic, which was established in Mogadishu in 2022 and has
become one of the country's leading hair restoration centres.
The clinic provides a range of services including Follicular
Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplants, beard transplants, hairline
reconstruction, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, Growth Factor Concentrate
(GFC) treatment, exosome therapy, laser hair treatment and scalp analysis.
According to industry stakeholders, technological
advancements have made hair transplantation safer, less invasive and more
effective, allowing patients to achieve natural-looking results with shorter
recovery times.
A spokesperson for Asal Hair & Skin Clinic said the
growing popularity of the procedures demonstrates increasing trust in Somalia's
healthcare sector.
"Modern hair transplantation offers patients a
permanent and natural solution to hair loss. What is encouraging is that people
no longer need to travel abroad to access quality treatment," the
spokesperson said.
"By providing advanced procedures, personalised care
and continuous follow-up support, we are ensuring patients enjoy a better
overall experience and results comparable to international standards," the
spokesperson added.
The clinic's contribution to the industry was recognised
with the Best Hair Clinic 2025 award, highlighting the rapid growth of
Somalia's hair restoration market.
As healthcare services continue to evolve across the Horn of
Africa, Somalia is steadily positioning itself as a destination for specialised
cosmetic and dermatological care, offering patients access to treatment closer
to home while reducing travel costs and improving convenience.
