Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, passed away early Monday morning in Vatican City at the age of 88.

He had served as the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church since his election in 2013, and was the first Jesuit Pope, the first from the Americas, and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years.

Known for his humility, progressive leadership, and deep concern for the marginalised, Pope Francis made historic visits to Africa, including a notable trip to Kenya in 2015, where he preached unity, peace, and environmental care.

“He was a pope of the people,” said one mourner.

“His spirit of compassion and humility will never be forgotten.”

The Vatican has announced funeral arrangements set for Saturday, April 26, 2025.
