Terror suspect arrested with 21 detonators in Nairobi

The 22-year-old was acting suspiciously when he was arrested and found in possession of the items.

A 22-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with terror-related activities. 

The suspect was arrested by police on patrol after he was found acting suspicious.

Upon interrogation by officers from Kamukunji police station, he was found with detonators and a white substance.

Police said they believe the substance is ammonium nitrate.

Other items were also found in his possession.

“Police officers on patrol at approximately 23:20 hours yesterday identified and arrested a man on suspicion of potential involvement in terror-related activities.

“Upon a further search, the 22-year-old suspect was found to be carrying 21 detonators, along with 21 packets of a white substance suspected to be ammonium nitrate, a five-metre-long electric cable, and other items,” police said.

The terror suspect was detained and handed over to the anti-terror police unit.

“The suspect was immediately detained and later handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) for further interrogation as investigations proceed.”

Police said his evasive and erratic behaviour attracted the attention of Kamukunji police officers.

Police said they remain vigilant and committed to protecting all members of the public.

“The National Police Service remains committed to protecting and serving the public.”

Between January 2022 and November 2024, Kenya thwarted 47 terrorist attacks across the country.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said this was made possible with the support of partners.

“During this period,  several terrorists were neutralised and the government has pushed for 11 successful convictions,” he said.

“The training and equipment support from international agencies came in handy. We received training and equipment support from the US, UK, Canada, Israel, Japan, China, and Korea.”

He said Kenya was happy to achieve milestones in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
