The Malka Suftu Crossover, a crucial crossing point over the River Daua, has long been a lifeline for the communities of Mandera in Kenya and Suftu in Ethiopia.

Local residents have traditionally used rafts to transport people, livestock, and goods across the border, strengthening economic and social ties between the two nations.

However, the risks associated with these outdated methods and the increasing demands of modern trade have necessitated a more sustainable solution.

Today marks a significant milestone in the region's history as a high-level delegation from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), along with the leadership from the County and representatives from the national government, met to launch the initial stage of the bridge construction at the Malka Suftu site.

This initiative is part of the broader Horn of Africa Gateway project, aiming to replace traditional rafts with a modern bridge to enhance safety, reduce travel time, and lower costs for traders and commuters.

This aligns with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) supported by H.E William Samoei Ruto administration, focusing on economic growth and market access.

Furthermore, the bridge will strengthen collaboration between Kenya and Ethiopia, fostering cross-border trade and cultural exchange.

As communities become more interconnected, opportunities for joint ventures and partnerships will increase, leading to shared prosperity.

The construction of the bridge also reflects IGAD's mission to connect communities across the Horn of Africa, emphasizing regional integration for sustainable development.

Apart from economic benefits, the bridge will have a significant impact on the lives of local residents by providing a safer means of crossing the river, ultimately saving lives and protecting livelihoods.

This infrastructure advancement symbolises hope, progress, and a commitment to improving the quality of life in the region.

As the construction of the Malka Suftu bridge begins, it showcases the collaborative efforts of both nations and IGAD's dedication to promoting peace, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa.

The bridge represents a gateway to a prosperous and interconnected future for Kenya and Ethiopia.
