Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic has boldly declared his intention to lead the team to two major silverware in his inaugural season.
Speaking at the club’s training ground at the SportPesa Foundation in Thika, Mihic said his charges possess the mojo and boast the depth to romp to the Kenyan Premier League and FKF Cup titles.
“Everything is good and we are eyeing a double this season. All the players are in high spirits and we have our entire squad to help us deliver the two trophies,” Mihic said.
He exuded confidence ahead of their crucial tie against bottom-placed Nairobi City Stars at Dandora Stadium on Thursday.
However, he is aware of the perils that lie ahead, cautioning his players against complacency and reminding them that City Stars, despite their struggles, are battling tooth and nail to evade the axe.
“It might look like an easy match, but that’s not the reality. Remember, City Stars are fighting for survival,” Mihic said.
City Stars have a paltry 27 points, two adrift of 17th-placed Murang’a Seal and three adrift of Bidco United at 16th.
Currently sitting third with 53 points, K’Ogalo face a daunting challenge of overtaking leaders Kenya Police, who have 58 points from 31 matches, two more than the champions.
“We are in the most competitive phase of the season. We must try as much as we can to secure every point from our remaining matches,” said Mihic.
Meanwhile, KCB will be desperate to stop the rot when they battle Kariobangi Sharks at the same venue.
The bankers are winless in their last six outings, two months since they beat Ulinzi Stars 2-1 on March 15.
Since then, Patrick Odhiambo’s men have lost thrice 1-0 to Gor Mahia, 2-1 to Kenya Police, 1-0 to Talanta and 1-0 to Shabana, alongside draws against Mara Sugar and Sofapaka.
With just four matches remaining, pressure is mounting on Odhiambo and his charges to hunt for a respectable finish.
Odhiambo admitted that wastefulness in front of the goal continues to plague his side, especially in their latest encounter against Shabana.
Sharks are winless in their last four matches. They fell 2-1 to Bandari and 1-0 to Kenya Police and settled for goalless draws against Murang’a Seal and Sofapaka.
