National secondary schools rugby 7s champions Friends School Bwake started their title defence on a winning note after beating Lenana School 19-0 at the Bull Ring in Kakamega.

Emmanuel Barasa scored three times for Bwake with Brandon Chesoli converting twice.

Bwake’s Director of Rugby, Ben Amboko, said: “We started slow but picked up momentum in the second half. This game was the biggest test in the pool, and we came out victorious.”

Former champions Koyonzo needed a last-minute try to beat minnows Friends School Anjego 10-7 in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

“It was a good game, but the boys made silly mistakes. We would have killed the game in the first half. I hope they will rise to the occasion in the second game,” said Anjego coach and principal J.J. Masime.

In a highly entertaining game, Bungoma High School overcame Musingu High 22-17 in a western region derby, while St Mary’s School Yala narrowly saw off a stubborn MPesa Foundation Academy 15-14.
