Sigoti Complex, Nyagichenche Mixed, and Sidindi are set to renew their intense rivalry in girls’ rugby sevens during the upcoming Nyanza Secondary Schools Sports Association Term Two games.

As the defending regional champions in both the 15s and 7s formats, Sigoti Complex enters the tournament as favourites to retain their crown. The Kisumu County champions will look to defend their title at Homa Bay School from July 7 to 11.

However, they face stiff competition from Sidindi, Nyakongo, and last year’s finalists Nyagichenche Mixed, all of whom are vying for the two coveted slots at the national championships, scheduled for July 28 to August 1 at the MPesa Foundation Academy.

In last year’s regional final, Sigoti Complex defeated Nyagichenche 19-7. This year, Nyagichenche coach Dennis Onyango is determined to claim the regional trophy.

“We lost in the finals last year and in the semis in the first term," Onyango said. "The losses hurt the girls, and they have vowed to avenge and win the regional title. I know Sigoti and Sidindi are among the favorites, but as Nyagichenche we have had adequate preparations and are ready to lift the title.”

Nyagichenche enters the tournament having successfully defended their Kisii County title for the third consecutive year by beating rivals Nyabisase 22-7 in the finals at Cardinal Otunga Senior School, Mosocho. Sigoti Complex secured their spot by thrashing Nyakach 27-12 to lift the Kisumu County title at Onjiko School, while Sidindi defended their Siaya County crown with a 17-0 victory over rivals Nyakongo.

Sidindi coach Gerald Ochieng, whose team narrowly lost 12-10 to Nyagichenche in last year's regional semi-finals, has set his sights on reaching the finals with a revamped strategy.

“We have changed our style of play," Ochieng explained. "Previously, we were relying on a few girls who were good runners. However, the game knowledge has improved, and we now play as a team. I expect the girls to compete and qualify for nationals.”

According to the provisional regional draws, defending champions Sigoti Complex headline Pool A alongside Enkinda from Nyamira and the Homa Bay County runners-up.

Pool B features Nyagichenche, former regional champions Nyakach Girls, and Nyakongo. Pool C will see Moi Suba battle Nyabisase and the Homa Bay County champions, while Sidindi are the favorites in Pool D, which also includes Komolo Rume and Nyamira's Rangenyo Girls.
