Siaya Governor James Orengo has urged the county assembly to fast-track its investigation into the controversial dismissal of more than 250 health workers, insisting the matter should be concluded within a fortnight rather than a month.
In a statement dated September 18, he said his administration would not interfere with the assembly’s inquiry or any other investigations by state agencies, but would instead wait for their findings and recommendations.
“Noting the public outrage over this issue, we urge the county assembly to conclude this matter in a fortnight rather than a month,” Orengo said.
“The executive will not take any action until the assembly completes its proceedings.”
He said his government had received a petition from dismissed health workers, who allege they were unfairly removed from service.
A similar petition has also been lodged with the county assembly of Siaya.
Orengo emphasised that due process must always be followed in county recruitment, with jobs advertised, applications received and interviews conducted.
He said this was the only lawful path for individuals to join the county public service.
The governor acknowledged concerns over possible irregularities in past appointments, including allegations that some positions may have been secured through bribes.
“It is necessary to examine each individual case. If indeed there were exchanges of money, such appointments would be null and void,” Orengo said.
He said the county government of Siaya would fully abide by the resolutions of the assembly and other relevant state organs, including the enforcement of administrative action.
Beyond the legal process, Orengo urged the county to engage with the affected workers and address their grievances in a fair and transparent manner.
He also called for lifestyle audits on individuals implicated in any fraudulent recruitment schemes.
The outcome of the assembly’s deliberations is expected to determine whether the dismissed health workers will be reinstated or if the appointments will be nullified altogether.
