Mathare United CEO Jeckton Obure is confident the SportPesa and Football Kenya Federation deal will propel the game to a professional level.

Obure joined all KPL teams’ representatives, FKF officials, and other Kenyan football stakeholders who attended the SportPesa League unveiling on 16 September 2025 in Nairobi.

The Slum Boys boss is confident the money pumped into the clubs will boost them financially and help in running the league professionally.

“Football is an expensive affair and we are looking forward to an improved package in the struggling clubs through the money injected by the gaming firm. Clubs should also look for other partners to ensure professionalism is achieved,” said Obure.

SportPesa and FKF revealed the 2025/2026 season champions will now pocket Sh15 million, which is triple what the previous winners used to get.

The runners-up will walk away with Sh3 million, and Sh2 million will go to the third-place finisher.

“The new financial windfall will motivate players and clubs to give their very best on and off the pitch. It also shows that investment in Kenyan football is beginning to grow, which is a big step towards professionalising the clubs,” Obure added.

SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri and FKF each contributed Sh10 million to create the new prize money.

The Federation president also noted that the Federation remains focused on attracting more partners to help grow the local game across all levels.

According to Obure, the 10-year deal provides clubs with the resources to invest in long-term development rather than focus on survival, signalling a brighter future for Kenyan football ahead of the new season.

Obure also confirmed Mathare will be seeking to improve on their 10th-place finish last season and rebuild to ensure they fight for honours next season.

The new season kicks off this weekend, with Tusker battling KCB in the season opener on Friday at 6 p.m. at Nyayo National Stadium.

Mathare kick off their season on Monday against Posta Rangers on September 22, 2025.
