The ex-DP is expected to announce the name of his new political outfit and set plans to consolidate support in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gachagua has settled on the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) as his new political vehicle, marking a significant step in his political battle against President William Ruto.
Having resigned from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on May 12, 2025, Gachagua is set to unveil the new party at the DCP headquarters on Musa Gitau Road, Lavington, on Thursday, May 15, at 9:00 a.m.
He and his allies have remained tight-lipped about the party’s identity, as part of a deliberate strategy to avoid scrutiny from state operatives.
However, it
has now emerged that Gachagua has indeed settled on DCP, which was officially
registered on February 3, 2025.
On May 14, 2025, Gachagua confirmed that he would announce the name on May 15 but urged for patience ahead of the party’s official national launch.
“What we are doing tomorrow (today, May 15, 2025) is the unveiling of the party. The launch of the party will happen later,” Gachagua told The Nation.
“The party will align with the aspirations of the Mt Kenya people. Its cardinal rule will be to listen to the ground.”
In a May 12, 2025, interview with Egesa FM, a radio station broadcasting in Ekegusii, Gachagua emphasised that the new party would reflect national inclusivity.
“I have appointed a secretary general, a deputy party leader, and several top officials from outside Mt Kenya. Those calling me a tribalist will be shocked,” he said.
The DCP’s party colours are green, brown, and black, and its logo features a hand touching an ear, symbolising "listening to the ground."
The party’s slogan is Kazi na Haki (Work and Justice).
Members of the DCP governing council include: Thomas Ratemo, Ado Yiembo, Mably Owino, Hussein Athman, Laura Njeri, Abdifatah Abdullahi, Joy Gatugi, Jeremiah Mong’eri, Joel Sang, John Maranga, Miriam Fredina Mariki, and Brenda Banjira Omusinda.
Gachagua has built his political message around “listening to the people,” whom he claims no longer identify with the UDA party that once propelled him and President Ruto to power.
Following his impeachment and dramatic fallout with the President, Gachagua has kept both allies and opponents guessing about which political vehicle he would use for the 2027 general elections.
Key opposition figures—including Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Martha Karua (PLP), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-Kenya), and former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i—are expected to attend the unveiling of Gachagua’s new party.
