Kenyans have raised significant amounts of money for the father of slain social influencer and teacher Albert Ojwang, Meshack Opiyo, just hours after launching an appeal.
Activist and comedian Eric Omondi is leading the initiative, mobilising funds from well-wishers across Kenya to create a fund for Ojwang’s three-year-old son and his family, following his death in police custody.
The appeal was launched on the evening of Tuesday, June 10, 2025. By midnight, Opiyo’s M-Pesa account had reached its daily transaction limit of Sh500,000 set by Safaricom.
This prompted Omondi to share details of another Safaricom line for Opiyo to allow more contributions from Kenyans determined to ensure Ojwang’s son lives a decent life and receives a lifetime education.
“Let’s stand with Baba Albert. Albert left behind a three-year-old son—let’s ensure he never lacks anything. May he grow up knowing his father died a hero,” Omondi appealed in one of his posts on X (formerly Twitter).
The comedian enjoys a massive social media following, and the campaign is expected to leverage his network of fans and friends to raise millions to support Ojwang’s family.
“Hey guys, God bless you for the overwhelming support! Hiyo simu ingine imejaa… Let’s keep sending. You can also send to Pochi la Biashara on the other number,” Omondi added in another post on Tuesday night.
Influential social media users picked up on the appeal as activists intensified efforts to raise funds for Ojwang’s family ahead of the burial.
Omondi has previously led similar drives, successfully raising millions of shillings through social media to support bereaved families and fund various charitable causes.
On Tuesday night, Omondi joined Ojwang’s father at Chiromo Hospital, where the body had been transferred after a postmortem was conducted at City Mortuary earlier in the day.
Videos shared online showed Omondi embracing Opiyo as they
viewed the body at Chiromo Mortuary, with the comedian saying a prayer for the
grieving father outside the morgue.
