As promised, the government today fulfilled the pledge by awarding each of the 27 players and 15 technical staff members Sh500,000 for their performance in the match.
“H.E. the president has kept his promise to Harambee stars after the draw with Angola yesterday. This afternoon, all 27 players and 15 officials have been awarded the cash prizes of 500K each as promised,” a statement from the Ministry of Sports confirmed.
The monetary reward is part of the government’s efforts to motivate the national team and boost morale as they continue their qualification journey.
President William Ruto promised to financially reward the national team for each victory in the competition.
In their first match, Stars beat DR Congo 1-0, earning them Sh1 million each.
Ruto unveiled the reward structure when he hosted the team for breakfast before the start of the tournament.
He said that for every win, each player will get Sh1 million per and for a draw, each one will get Sh500,000.
Ruto also announced a Sh600 million prize if the team lifts the CHAN trophy, tripling the earlier promised Sh200 million.
“I want us to make a deal. For every game you win, every player gets Sh1 million. For every game you draw, every player gets Sh500,000. We had agreed that the team would get Sh200 million for making it to the finals. But I make it Sh600 million if you win the competition,” Ruto said.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also pledged a staggering Sh400 million reward to the Harambee Stars if they win the CHAN.
The total potential payout now stands at Sh1 billion—the highest-ever cash incentive for a Kenyan national team.
Sonko stated that his offer is not a competition with the Head of State but rather a show of support for the national team.
“The President has done a good gesture; it will motivate the players. I am not in competition with the President, but mine will be just to support his gesture,” Sonko said.
