Leaders from Narok and Kisii counties have resolved to organise peace tournaments to foster cohesion between feuding communities along the Trans Mara-Kisii border.

The resolution was arrived at on Friday during a joint peace and security meeting at Kiango on the Kisii-Narok border chaired by Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen.

The Interior CS toured the area in an effort to find a lasting solution to the recent cross-border skirmishes.

The meeting was attended by residents and leaders from the region, led by National Assembly Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro (South Mugirango) and Kilogoris MP Julius Sunkuli (Kilgoris).

Education CS Julius Ogamba and MPs Obadiah Barongo (Bomachoge Borabu), Rebecca Tonkei (Narok Woman Rep), Doris Donya (Kisii Woman Rep), Nominated Senators Gloria Orwoba and Esther Onyekuri, as well as a host of MCAs, were also present.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, Rift Valley RC Abdi Hassan, and his Nyanza counterpart Florence Mworoa also attended the security meeting.

Murkomen commended the leaders and members of the two communities for working with the security teams deployed in the area to quickly restore peace.

He announced a raft of measures aimed at improving security along the troubled borderline.

The measures include the operationalisation of new administrative units, the expansion of the police posts along the border, and an increase in police officers.

The CS further said the road along the border will be upgraded in order to boost trade and improve access to security services.

"The region will also benefit from some of the 5000 vehicles and motorcycles that are currently being procured to boost police and National Government Administration Officers work across the country," a statement from the Interior ministry reads.

Murkomen affirmed the government's commitment to strengthen security at the grassroots level, revealing that a policy had been developed to recognise and support village elders.

"The policy, now at the public participation stage, will boost community policing," the statement added.

In his commitment to pacify the area, Murkomen reiterated his earlier directive to security personnel to apprehend those involved in crime and disband criminal gangs in the area.

He also directed chiefs to move with speed and rein in illicit drinks and drugs, which are ruining the future of children and worsening insecurity along the borderline.

The leaders present during the security meeting rallied locals to co-exit in harmony, as has been the case for more than 20 years.

Renewed clashes between youth from the Trans Mara and Kisii regions over alleged cattle theft erupted on March 4, 2025.

The conflict escalated after a cow and calf were allegedly stolen from the Kisii side of the border, resulting in injuries and destruction of property.

Rival groups engaged in battle using bows and arrows, with reports indicating that eight people were injured, and there were reports of three deaths.

The clashes were concentrated around the Transmara West area in Narok county and the Bomachoge Borabu border in Kisii county.

A crisis meeting convened by political leaders from both sides in the Kiango area helped calm emotions and restore peace.

"I will later lead another peace meeting at Empurkel Mosocho as part of our commitment to ensuring lasting cohesion in the area," Murkomen said.
