Gabriel Ayimba of Strathmore Leos tackles Elvis Olukusi during the Driftwood Sevens final in July/FILEStrathmore Leos head coach Willis Ojal believes depth will be key as the varsity side targets a playoff slot in the upcoming Kenya Cup season, which starts on November 22.
The Madaraka-based side finished eighth last season with 18 points, eight behind sixth-placed Blak Blad in the final playoff position.
Ojal believes they have learnt from last season's mistakes.
"We did not start last season well; we were short in terms of numbers, but I believed we have adequate depth (this time). I believe we also need to start the season strongly and keep pace with the big boys,” added Ojal.
The Leos won just three of 11 games to miss out on the playoffs for the fourth straight season. Ojal said they will be buoyed by the performance from the Sevens Series, where they finished second behind KCB.
“The 15s game is totally different, but the momentum and confidence we have gained from the Sevens Series will be key as we challenge for the Kenya Cup,” noted Ojal.
Leos will test their acumen in an Impala Floodlit quarterfinal against Nondies at the Impala Club on Saturday.
"This pre-season event will tell us where we are and what areas we can improve... tactical flexibility, setpiece, attack and defence. It will be a bonus if we win the tournament, but the big picture is to be in a position to battle for the playoffs come the start of the season,” noted Ojal.
They plan to muscle up during the December–January transfer window.
“We will assess the situation come that period and see what areas we need to solidify," said Ojal.
The key Leos' players include Raymond Chacha, Barnabas Owuor, Ian Masheti and Duke Odenyo in the forward pack. Arnold Muita, Elton Amalemba and Gabriel Ayimba are the main actors in the backline.
