After penning a one-year extension with Tusker FC, skipper Charles Momanyi has vowed to steer the Brewers back into title contention after a disappointing end to their 2024/25 campaign.
Despite enjoying a strong spell mid-season that saw them sit second on the log and breathing down the necks of eventual champions Kenya Police, Tusker's title charge unravelled dramatically in the final stretch. The Brewers stumbled to a four-game winless run at the business end of the season.
They fell 2-0 to FC Talanta before enduring a humiliating 7-1 mauling at the hands of Sofapaka. Goalless stalemates against Kariobangi Sharks and Kakamega Homeboyz sealed their fate. With the poor run of results, Tusker slipped to fourth on the final standings with 57 points.
Police led the standings, claiming their maiden League title with 65 points, with Gor Mahia second on 59 points and Kakamega Homeboyz in third place with 58 points. But with a new campaign looming on the horizon, the ever-reliable Momanyi is determined to lead a resurgence. "Last season was not entirely how we envisioned but as a leader, we want to make sure we do better next season,” Momanyi said in a statement.
The towering defender has been a rock at the heart of the Tusker backline and a leader both on and off the pitch since joining the club in 2021 from record League champions K'Ogalo. Momanyi featured in 33 of Tusker’s 34 league matches this season, anchoring the defence with composure and grit.
Having played a key role in Tusker’s 2020/21 title triumph, their 12th League crown, the 30-year-old now has his sights set on adding more silverware to the cabinet. "I'm even more excited about what lies ahead. I want to thank the management, my teammates and the fans for their unwavering support."
Momanyi revealed he was honoured to have extended his deal at the Ruaraka-based outfit, calling it a second home. “It’s a great honour for me to continue this journey with Tusker FC. This club has become home, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together so far."
Head coach Charles Okere hailed the skipper’s renewed commitment, underlining his importance to the club’s ambitions. “Momanyi is more than just a captain; he’s a true leader and a mentor to the younger players," he said.
He highlighted that his presence both on and off the pitch was invaluable. "His presence in the dressing room and on the pitch is invaluable, and having him commit to the club for the long term is a big boost to our ambitions."
Momanyi’s new deal comes at a crucial time as the Brewers rebuild for the upcoming season with sights set on reclaiming the league title. Tusker CEO Sam Nzau echoed the sentiment, describing the extension as a statement of intent.
“Keeping our top players like Momanyi is part of our strategy to build a competitive and sustainable team. His leadership and consistency make him a key pillar in our plans moving forward,” he said.
