Tusker's fabian Adikiny vies for the ball with KCB's Boniface Omondi/TUSKERFC
Tusker and KCB renew long-standing rivalry on Saturday lunchtime when the two SportPesa League sides clash in a high-stakes Mozzart Bet Cup semi-final at Nyayo Stadium.
With both clubs out of the league title contention, the domestic cup presents their final realistic chance to secure silverware, continental football and salvage what has largely been a frustrating campaign.
KCB head into the decisive encounter boasting the tournament’s best defensive record, with Robert Matano’s side reaching the semi-finals without conceding.
The bankers opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Compel FC before producing a dominant attacking display to thrash Zetech Titans 4-0 in the Round of 32.
They then eased past Chebaiywa Lions with a convincing 3-0 victory before edging outgoing champions Nairobi United 1-0 in a tense quarter-final settled by Richard Omondi’s strike.
The impressive cup run marks a major improvement for KCB after last season’s painful Round of 16 exit at the hands of Nairobi United.
Matano has praised his players for their discipline, focus and consistency throughout the competition.
“We have worked hard to reach this stage and the players have shown great discipline and character,” said Matano.
“Tusker is a strong opponent, but we are prepared for the challenge and focused on achieving our objective of reaching the final.”
KCB captain Nashon Alembi also expressed confidence ahead of the clash, insisting the team has steadily improved tactically as the tournament progressed.
“The boys are ready. We have had our winnings; we have improved our strategy. We are ready to take on Tusker FC and emerge victorious,” said Alembi.
KCB’s defensive solidity has been one of the defining features of their campaign, with the backline of Fadhili Masoud, Alembi, Siraj Mohammed and Victor Okello providing stability and composure under pressure.
Tusker, meanwhile, have taken a far more turbulent route to the semi-finals but arrive at Nyayo buoyed by growing confidence under head coach Jullien Mette.
The brewers survived an entertaining 3-2 battle against Mwea United in the opening round before recording composed victories over Bidco United and Kariobangi Sharks to keep their cup ambitions alive.
Their quarter-final clash against Ulinzi Stars proved to be their toughest test yet.
Trailing late in the match, Tusker mounted a spirited comeback to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory with a stoppage-time winner that sparked wild celebrations among players and supporters.
The comeback not only highlighted Tusker’s resilience but also handed Mette one of his biggest wins since taking charge.
Saturday’s encounter is expected to be another tightly contested affair, with recent meetings between the two sides often decided by narrow margins and moments of individual brilliance.
For KCB, the semi-final offers a chance to play in the cup final for the first time since the 2023/24, when they suffered penalty heartbreak against Kenya Police FC after a goalless draw in regulation time.
Tusker, on the other hand, will be eager to continue their resurgence under Mette and keep alive hopes of ending the season with a trophy.
The winner will contest the final against either of Police FC and Bandari, whose semifinal is scheduled for Saturday 3:45 pm at the same venue.
